Misc...

Here is a race report from the portland race on April 27-28th.

Well, we ended up smoking the motor at the endurance race. Around lap 45 I had retaken the bike and on my 4th lap lost all power going up the hill from turn 8. About half way down the straight I knew something bad had gone on inside the motor. I pulled off at the end of the straight and ended up limping it back to the pits. She wouldn't run, was BURNING hot, and venting all her coolent through the breather. We dropped the motor on Sunday instead of going sprint racing that day and we'll still have yet to see what the damage is. There is a slight tap comming from what sounds like the bottom end, have to see. We ended up taking 3rd by attritrion and got a Ghawd aweful flashy trophy (Big pillars and all :) ) and now it's just gonna be what happened inside the motor to tell us how much it's gonna cost to fix. My guess is $500 best case, $1,500 worst case meaning a new motor from scratch... So, anybody wanna sponsor a Hawk Motor rebuild?

Update! The motor lost the crank, it took the cases and a rod with it. We have a crank and now we just have to get the cases fixed (Should be today 5/21/96) and the crank balanced. Velassco has a spare carillo rod for sale and that just leaves the time to put her all back together and break the motor in before the next race... Looking like it's gonna be the $1500 figure I guessed

- Matt Schreiner 5/21/96

Update! The motor LIVES... I missed the race at PIR for the FUSA/NASB races because I didn't know I was getting the motor back until a few days after pre-entry closed. Anyway, I will be racing at the Hoquiam, Streets of Hoquiam races on the 25th!

- Matt Schreiner 8/22/96

Motor dead for the rest of the season...

Well, seems the cases can't be repaired after all the money, $400 for new cases just to make the last 2 races of the year, budget too tight, ends up with not running. I should be able to get some cases during the winter break and get the motor back together again... Maybe catch a race down at Willow Springs or Laguna Seca before season gets back to running in the NW again. Looks like next year. Well, that's the season. 2 trophies (3rd place both), a good deal of fun and frustration, and hopefully a good number of lessons learned. #1, if it comes down to money/time, choose time money doesn't always pay off, #2, turn #2 at SIR is a 3rd, not 4th, gear turn on my bike!, #3, bring LOTS of spares, #4, plan on having fun and winning if you can, else you'll be dissapointed (I actually knew this before hand, just restating it for my own reminder and a warning to others) Thanks to all my supporters and fans, we'll be back next season stronger than ever!!!
